                            DARE

                          By Noah

The National Institute on Drug Abuse estimates that nearly one-fourth of people who try heroin will become addicted. Cocaine is the 7th most popular drug in the world after alcohol, tobacco, cannabis, caffeinated energy drinks, MDMA & Shisha Tobacco. The average age for Canadians to begin drugs is 15.7. More than 100,000 babies are born addicted to cocaine each year in the United States due to their mothers’ use of the drug during pregnancy. These are some of the facts that the D.A.R.E. program taught me that will help me and others make the right choice. The D.A.R.E program teaches students about the effects of alcohol, drugs, and resistance strategies.

The bad effects of alcohol is one of the reasons I will remain drug free. Did you know

75,000 people die from alcohol related deaths? Did you know that more than 400,000 Americans die each year from tobacco related causes? Mixing alcohol with medicine is very dangerous. Drinking alcohol weakens the heart muscle and reduces the amount of blood pumped to and from the heart. Teen bodies are still growing so alcohol affects teens more severely the adults. Other alcohol effects are loss of coordination, poor judgement, memory loss, loss of self control, and slow reflexes.

There are also a lot of bad effects in tobacco and cigars, so I will help others never start or encourage them to stop. In the United States, it is illegal to sell tobacco to anyone under the age of 18 or 19. Did you know there are more than 200 known harmful chemicals in cigarette smoke? All cigarettes contain nicotine which is extremely addictive. Smoking is the leading preventable cause of death in this country. Using tobacco can cause heart disease, you will have more colds and upper respiratory problems,  and smoking causes lung cancer. Chewing tobacco can cause mouth cancer, tooth loss, and other health problems

To help people say no to drugs, here are five ways to say no. You can say no by avoiding the situation and staying away from places that people use drugs. For support in saying no to drugs, stay with a crowd of nonusers.  Always walk away when someone offers you drugs or cigarettes. Also say no and give an excuse when someone offers you alcohol or drugs. If someone offers you drugs, change the subject by saying, “Do you wanna play a game?” instead of taking the substance. Walk away and say no to anyone who offers you drugs.

In conclusion, drugs are bad for you and you should never start. By staying alcohol and drug free and using the five ways to say no, I will remain drug free. I pledge to stay drug free and stay positive. I will be a role model for others to not start drugs. I will never hurt others by peer pressure. I pledge to encourage my friends to stay drug and alcohol free. I would like to say thank to officer greg vincil for teaching me all of these amazing facts about drugs and teaching me how to say no.
